Satan is not omnipotent.
He is not all knowing.
On this day, many years ago, he really thought he had won. He really thought that he had finally “beaten” God.
He had watched Jesus die.
He watched the despair fill everyone at the foot of the cross, as Jesus stopped breathing.
He had watched the stone be rolled in front of the tomb, sealing Jesus in.
All principalities and darkness and wickedness rejoiced as the stone thudded against the tomb wall.
When Jesus cried, “it is finished,” Satan rejoiced.
Those words brought him joy.
It was finished, done, his plan had worked!
He was victorious.
Tetelestai.
It was over.
He was unhindered.
The only one who could’ve been a perfect sacrifice, laid in a tomb.
Death was final.
He had raised others from the dead, but if you’re dead, how can you raise yourself?
Yes, it was finished.
But not in the way he thought.
On this day, many years ago, seemed to be silent in defeat, death seemed to seal the finality of what had happened.
Tetelestai.
But not in the way that everyone thought.
As Sunday morning dawned, the laughter of the underworld turned into screams of anguish as the stone rolled away, and the King walked out.
They were once again, under his dominion.
Their fate was sealed.
Hell was theirs.
“It is finished” hadn’t meant what they thought.
It was finished, and there was hope.
In the most hopeless moment, when even Satan believed he had won, he was still defeated.
In your most hopeless moment, when everything seems finished, and the stone has sealed your tomb of despair, the resurrection power is YOURS.
This is not final.
Saturday is silent.
But the dawn of Sunday is just a few hours away.
This is not permanent.
Tetelestai.
But not in the way that Satan wants you to believe.
