The Crumbs Can Wait

The crumbs can wait.

They will still be there tomorrow.

A little chubby hand, pats the floor and asks you to come sit.

Your to-do list hollers out, almost louder than the little voice who beckons you to the floor.

But sometimes, sitting at Jesus’ feet, like Mary did, looks a lot like sitting in the floor with a little one, the crumbs that cover the floor can be vacuumed tomorrow.

This moment won’t be here tomorrow.

The sink is full of dishes.

Your husband wants to tell you about his day.

You are his safe place.

But the dishes….

Maybe you can multitask. Do both.

But without your eye contact, he feels you don’t hear him, and he slowly ends the conversation.

You hardly notice because you’re going through your to-do list again.

Sometimes, worship, looks a lot like being present for your spouse. The dishes will be there later, this moment will not.

“This one thing is needful.”

Mary chose the good part, instead of the serving. We think of service as our avenue of worship. And while it often is, sometimes worship is choosing to reject being “cumbered about” and choosing to present with what God has given you.

The laundry is piled.

You stepped in crumbs…again.

There are muddy footprints in the hallway.

The kids didn’t sleep last night.

There’s always so much serving.

It’s ever present.

But the “good part” is not always available.

You will likely never get this opportunity to be present for a friend.

You will never get this moment back with your children.

You’ll never see this moment again with your spouse.

And one day, when the crumbs are less, the laundry is easier to keep up with, and there aren’t as many dishes in the sink, you’ll look back in regret at all the moments you were cumbered about with much serving, instead of choosing to sit at his feet, in worship. Even if that looks a little bit different than you anticipated.

Don’t let serving become a weight to you.

There will be days that worship looks a lot like leaving the crumbs til tomorrow, and sitting in the floor with your child today.

That’s the good part.

It will not be taken away🤍

Luke 10:41-42

“And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
