Genesis 3:6
“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.”
Before Satan could tempt Eve, he had to get her away from Adam.
He drew her off, on her own, so that he could whisper in her ear.
He drew her away from the one who should’ve been her voice of truth and reason, and whispered lies.
How many times did he draw her away?
The Bible doesn’t say.
He could’ve worked on her deception for a very long period of time.
The first time he whispered those lies to her, she may have even brushed him off, and told him he was crazy.
But she came back to hear him again.
She came back to look at that which was forbidden one more time.
She came back and listened, even though she had already heard the truth:
We don’t know how many times she conversed with the serpent.
But eventually, she heeded his voice.
Satan wants to draw you away from anyone in your life who will tell you the truth. That’s why so many get angry with the preacher, because Satan is seeking to draw them away from once who will shut down the whispers of Satan.
Maybe you brushed Satan off the first time, or even rebuked him.
But you came back to listen to him whisper again. You came back to see what he would say today.
You came back, because you’re alone, no one will know that you actually listened to what he had to say.
Eve, in the beginning, probably never planned to actually heed what the serpent said. She never planned to act on what he suggested. She never planned to disobey.
She was just listening.
But she wasn’t listening to anyone or anything BUT the serpent.
She couldn’t stop the serpent from whispering.
But she could have chosen to not allow herself to be separated off alone, she could’ve filled her mind with the truth straight from the mouth of God. She could’ve told Adam what the serpent was saying and ask him to remind her of TRUTH.
But instead, she kept going back “just to see what he would say today.”
It is never harmless to listen to the whispers of the serpent.
What she saw and what she heard overcame what God said.
The enemy will seek to draw you away from truth, from those who seek to guard you from his whispers.
He doesn’t mind to work subtly for long periods of time. As long as you’re dwelling on his whispers, rather than the truth you know, he has won half the battle.
Recognize the serpent for who he is.
Recognize the whispers for what they are.
Keep choosing truth, keep standing, and stay close to those who point you to truth.
The whispers of Satan may sound good, but they are never for your benefit!
